Correspondence with Alma Mahler, Franz Werfel, and Adolf Klarmann, 1936-1971.

Except for a contract dated 1936, the correspondence begins in 1942, and most of it (48 items) stems from the period between 1942 and 1945, carried on between Werfel and Huebsch. 14 items comprise a correspondence between Huebsch and Adolf Klarmann, dated 1938 to 1971. Topics of the correspondence between Huebsch and Werfel are publishing matters concerning Werfel's works, including sales; promotion; permissions; film and dramatic rights; and translations. A significant portion of correspondence concerns Werfel's novel The Song of Bernadette, especially with respect to sales and promotion (including the types of editions to be produced and book-club arrangements). 1 letter from Werfel to Huebsch is his heartfelt recommendation of the mansucript of Alexander Granach's novel Da geht ein Mensch; Huebsch responds in detail, about the lack of prospects for the book vis-à-vis the American audience. 1 draft item from Werfel expresses his frustration over what was apparently a disheartening reaction from Huebsch about the manuscript of (as it turned out) his last novel, Stern der Ungeborenen. The letter drafted by Klarmann for Alma Mahler, addressed to Huebsch, proposes an English-language edition of Werfel's collected plays. Included are 2 Viking Press contracts: a photostatic copy of a typescript of 1 contract, dated 1936, concerning Werfel's novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, and a collection of stories, Twighlight of a World; and 1 contract, signed by Huebsch and Alma Mahler, and dated 1945, for an English-language edition of her memoir about Gustav Mahler (Memories and Letters).
